Rancho Mirage Estate Sales and Auction Company manages the sale of all types of important pottery. Whether it’s from the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, 20th century, or 19th century, we can valuate, research if needed, and sell your important pottery via public sale, private sale, consignment, or auction. As we have a network of investors and collectors, often we already have a buyer or two in our pocket.
Typical pottery we curate includes plates, jugs, vases, bowls, tea bowls, trays, goblets, bottles, chargers, candle holders, vessels with or without handles, planters, and even tiles.
Safe to say that extremely old pottery can be extremely valuable. Pottery prior to the 15th century from Greece (below left), Islamic pottery from the 17th century (below right), vases from the Han Dynasty (below center), are all valued in the $20,000 range.
As of late, Chinese pottery has become very desirable for both collecting and investment as well as decor. Some of the most beautifully decorated homes in the world now display some sort of Asian pottery. You cannot open an edition of Architectural Digest without seeing Chinese vases or urns perched proudly in a multi million dollar home. Whether the setting is modern, traditional, or contemporary, Asian pottery can always serve as a surprise pop of art. It is it’s contrast to a very modern setting that makes it even more special.
Three Types of Pottery to Watch For:
There are three main types of ceramic ware: earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Earthenware is the oldest and easiest type of pottery to create. It is also the softest, and uses the lowest temperature (typically between 1000 and 1200 degrees Celsius). Stoneware is a denser type of pottery that is fired at a higher temperature (between 1100 and 1300 degrees Celsius). Porcelain which is used for Chinese pottery remains the finest and most valuable variant – is finer than stoneware, makes a ringing tone when tapped, and has a characteristic translucence when held up to the light.
